This Central Ohio city was settled in 1808. Later, in 1816, Delaware was incorporated and made the county seat of Delaware County, which is the fastest-growing county in Ohio. Delaware is located about 30 miles north of Columbus. The city has a population of 45,400. It was named after the Delaware Indians. Joseph Barber was the first settler in Delaware. He came in 1807. Not long after that, additional settlers came into the area, and the most well-known among them were Moses Byxbe, William Little, Solomon Smith, Thomas Butler and Elder Jacob Drake. Originally, Delaware’s founders planned on putting the town on the east bank of the river. However, they later moved it to the west bank. Later, when officials moved the state capital out of Chillicothe, Columbus and Delaware were both considered for the new location. Delaware is said to have lost by a single vote for the new location. After the War of 1812, settlers started coming to Delaware in large numbers. The parents of Rutherford B. Hayes, the 19th President of the United States, were among them and while their home no longer stands today, a historical marker recognizes the location as the former home of the historic former U.S. president.
